The Artist Interrogations podcast. Well, it's Peaches here sitting at the, Soundwell in Salt Lake City. I'm here with Casey and I believe CJ as well. That's your name. Right?

Okay. I I I had to make sure. It was only two letters and I had to make sure I got it right. Well, you got it. Got Casey and CJ of Deadlands.

How are you guys doing today? Good. How are you, Peach? Doing fantastic. It's great to see you in person, see you guys in person, see you guys live for the very first time ever.

So Yeah, dude. We're stoked. I'm excited. I'm also excited for Sing Queen. I was showing the person behind the camera Sing Queen and her jaw hit the floor.

So, yeah. She's not necessarily into this type of music, but I think after tonight, she might be into it. Oh, yeah. This is this is definitely a great gateway bill for sure. I mean, you also have Gurley on the bill who she's a pop singer for anybody who doesn't know.

And you have you have pretty much the best of both worlds tonight. You have you have pop, then you have the metalcore, and then seeing Queen, you have the blend of the two, which she coins as Bimbalcore. It's gonna be fantastic. I do love the name of the tour, the Hot Singles in Your Area tour. I think that's fantastic.

Oh, it's great. Hot shows. Yeah. Hot shows in your area is fantastic. I did see the line, hot shows in your area.

Is that what it's called? It is. I got it wrong. Hot I I album. The album is hot singles in your area.

Okay. There we go. I thought it was hot singles in your area too at first. And I said it on stage one night and then I was like, wait second. That didn't feel right.

And it's hot shows. At least you didn't say the wrong city. That's true. You I'm I'm hoping you have never done that. I will hopefully never do it.

I have not. CJ, just tell her the wrong city next time. I might. You might. Just pull pull what Caleb Schoemmoe did one time.

No. Corey Taylor came to Pocatello, Idaho and said, what's up, Oregon? And messed it up. Oh, no. So oh, yes.

Right, Casey. So since last time we chatted, we were on Zoom. We talked about the Idaho Potato Museum. Oh, right. And I don't know why we talked about it.

I was trying to find the audio of that interview before I left work. Could not find it. Could not find it whatsoever. But I think it's still on the computer. But in that backpack right there, Aubrey, could you open that up?

We stopped by the Idaho Potato Museum on the three hour drive here No. To get you guys a gift. Are you kidding me? There's a poster. So for some reason, Marilyn Monroe posed in an Idaho potato sack and that and she never even stepped foot in Idaho, I don't think.

Oh, there's her phone. Down. It's okay. It's okay. Goes down.

We're not professional. I don't wanna drop the microphone. We're we're not professional here. That's okay. Wow.

This poster. Yo. This is going in Bertha. This is this is like a Nardwar moment. That's exactly what I was doing.

I was like, well, I have a gift for you. I have a gift for you. This is the best gift ever. You're Casey Carlson. We have to know.

Something like that. Casey Carlson of Deadlands. We have to know. Deadlands, we have to know. Yeah.

Exactly. Oh, there's also one more thing in there too. There so Aubrey behind the camera, we decide we were trying to figure out what exactly to get you, and she was like, the poster seems like the best fit. And then It's fantastic. Aubrey, there's little wrapped up thing that should be in there.

There you go. Oh my god. It's a little gift wrap you guys see. She asked me at the museum if I wanted it wrapped. I'm like, okay.

Cool. Do it for me. Thank you. I love it. Because opening the gift's the best part.

It is. And Oh. Yeah. CJ can use that too. I'm my bad dude.

I Oh my god. It's an Idaho potato museum shot glass. Fantastic. It's got a big table on it. I'm I'm the And I But that I I like drinking out of tiny cups though.

So this is perfect. Thank you very much. Of course. People know who's using this. Yeah.

I mean, it it it can be used by anybody who would like to. So I don't drink at all. Great part. I have shot glasses all throughout my place because all my friends do, and I wanna have to be like, do you wanna drink out the Wyoming glass or, like, the Newport aquarium glass? I love it.

All the weird stuff and I I I collect that weird crap. Like, if I was in a touring band, I would for sure just have a box full of trinkets for whatever reason. My my collection item is always, like, clothes, of course. But but not like It's not even like t shirts. It's literally just like, oh, like I found this pair of pants that I can wear on stage in this city or just like something stupid or key chains.

Key chains are sick. I love key chains. We have a lot of candy too from this tour. Do you know what candy is? No.

Okay. So in in the Plur community, which is peace, love, unity, and respect. It's like a lot a lot of people who go to raves are in this community. And essentially, they'll they'll make friendship bracelets like those over there. And you call them candy.

And, like, essentially, you're supposed to do what is it? What's the thing? Do you know the thing? I don't. Okay.

I hold your hand up. So it's I think it's supposed to be like this and then this Mhmm. And then this. Oh, wait. At the heart first Yeah.

And then you grab your hand and then you Gotcha. Put the bracelet on as yes. Okay. It's like a ritual. Because they had friendship bracelets and one said like spud princess and I was like, do I get that?

She told me. Spud princess is epic as Next time, I when we go to the Idaho Potato Museum, I shall be crowned the spud princess. You have to. Yeah. You have to go.

I've never been through the museum. They just have the gift shop out front and I just was like, okay, I need to get her something from here because for some reason we talked about it, and I do not remember what we talked about. I don't either. Yeah. We do I mean, you do so many interviews.

I can't imagine, like, remembering them all. I remember speaking to you. I just I've never really liked the actual what? I'm shocked you remember me because there's, like, plenty of rock stars I've talked to the second time. They're like, oh, okay.

What's your name again? And they look at the, like, the Zoom the screen on the Zoom call and go, okay. Peach and then yeah. No, dude. I think pea first of all, I love peaches, so I think maybe that helps.

But, I mean, yo, like, I I try to remember. My my memory is not the greatest, but, like, either way. I can just only imagine, like, touring everywhere. Everyone's trying to interview you, all that stuff. And I feel bad for poor CJ.

I'm glad you're here, dude, because I always see Casey do interviews, and I'm like, we need to have the rest of the band included as well. Dude, I am so happy to be here, dude. I'm only I'm I'm but a mere half of Deadlands. Are you from LA as well? I'm from New York.

We're both from New York. Both from New York. Okay. I just saw the LA hat and was like, he came he came from, like, where I'm from, you know. That's that's funny.

But the whole upside down thing, I never understood either. Sorry. I just got distracted. I never got it either. Yeah.

But you guys are obviously towards the tail end of this tour from what I've seen on the website. I'm hoping that's correct. That is correct. But Scene Queen is going international, and you guys are just being are just done. Right?

I believe we are done unless she says otherwise. Oh. But as as far as we are aware, we are staying in The US. Well, you are you are super busy all the time. That's the thing, Rob and I were talking about outside is that you are all over the place.

I mean, you're touring. You're also sometimes Nida I don't know if it's a Strauss or Strauss? Strauss. Yeah. Strauss.

Okay. I wanna make sure I get that correct. Nida Strauss. And then you're also you went through school at one point. You all this stuff.

How do you have the time to do it all? Honestly, I don't. I mean, I just try my best and I I I have ADHD, so I can't, like, set my mind to one thing and do it. I have to do 50 things at once. Mhmm.

CJ, I think you will understand because you also have crippling ADHD. Yes. I do. Do you have a whole planner, like, on what to do next? No?

Nope. I can't do that. You just get told what to do or I just try to remember. Try to remember. Okay.

Sometimes I'll write it down in my notes app if I'm lucky, but most of the times I am not so lucky. Are you the organized guy? Dude, I'm the Vyvanse guy, bro. I'm the medicated ADHD guy. It's the only way I can function.

And guess who didn't take their fucking meds today? Oh, no. Alright. Yeah. It's gonna be a wild one in Salt Lake City.

I I already saw the crowd outside. It looks like it's gonna be a crazy show because the Salt Lake City crowd always they're they're always wild and crazy. Like, our boss, Victor, or my, he went to the Poppy Show recently here, and the whole crowd was wild just for just for her. So and there's people, like, sequin dresses out there and everything, like, they're they're ready to go. I have to say, it's gonna be pretty hard to beat the Nile Theater in Mesa, Arizona, and Oklahoma City.

They were so rowdy, and, like, that was, like, some of the best shows we have ever played. Yeah. So if if from what you're saying is true, I'm really looking forward to tonight. I I may I may be, you know, I'm talking enough too much. Next thing you know, I went out there is is like me just standing there just watching.

Yeah. I've become that guy that just sits there with my arms folded and just judges the whole time. Oh. I mean, as we get older, I think we all do. Yeah.

I think because I I feel like I'm 30 and I'm 23 because I I think I've just had enough experience in the pit. And also, like, before music, I was a cheerleader. Oh, gotcha. And as as, you know, a lot of people are like, it's not a sport. It is way harder than it seems, and you have to, like, really destroy your body to do a lot of the things that you can do.

As a powder puff cheerleader myself, it's it's tough. Wow. It's it's, like, one game and one game only. My school is like, we need more dudes to be the powder puff cheerleaders. They go.

The biggest dude on campus. That is fantastic. Casey's like, I did not wanna picture that. Thank you. No.

I love it. I think I think we need some more pom poms for you tonight. That sure. Yeah. Exactly.

You need to get up on stage and do the dance to l shaped couch. Oh. Dude, he can be in bimbo beta pie. He can be in bimbo beta pie. What are you doing, Peach?

You have to be inducted into Sea Queen has a sorority. Do they? And you need to be a part of it and you need to bust out the mother pom poms. Yes. Yes.

Busters. They're both nodding their heads behind the camera over there? Oh, yeah. Bust out the pompoms, Ryan. Rob's like, I don't need to do it.

I'm okay. Well, I did wanna talk more about the EP seven that you guys currently have out. Your second body of work, I know there was I completely forget the title of it, the first one. Sentence of myself. That's what it was.

But the second one, seven all about, you know, the seven deadly sins. And I heard your whole thing about gluttony. I thought that was really cool talking about eating disorders and all of that. But are you all into the whole tarot card reading thing? Oh, yeah.

Because I I've I've never been into it. I've never understood it at all. So I was like, maybe I should learn more from Casey who was possibly into it. Oh, absolutely. Well, I mean, that was the whole reason why we did it is because we love tarot cards, the witchy stuff.

I mean, the way that we, you know, themed it with the EP isn't necessarily the way that but in theory, like, I I kinda wanted to plan, like, oh, this is your fortune. But, like, your sin is your fortune. So why is it your fortune? Like, do you relate to that sin at all? And if you do, why?

Like, is it because it's something that you need to fix about yourself or is it something that you relate to from somebody else? So it's it's very multifaceted. I think it we we definitely tried to get into the lore a little bit more. If if I could say anything, I I feel like tarot in general is, like, a really cool way to, like, look at self reflection. And that's every single song on this record is about self reflection.

Like, each sin is, like like, how do you like, how how have you in your life succumb to that sin? You know? Uh-huh. So it's, like, it's perfect, self reflection, I feel. I was wondering if the the rest of the band was into it or if you guys were just following, like, Casey's, like, orders where it's like, okay.

This is what I wanted to write a song about. Uh-uh. There there are two bosses in Deadlands, and it's mister CJ and missus Casey. The rest are just, you know I mean, well, so in Deadlands, like, me and Casey are the actual only members. Everyone yeah.

Everyone else is just, touring. We love them like family, of course. Yeah. Andrew, our drummer, is Casey's boyfriend, and he is, like, my best friend in the world. I fucking love him to death.

So, like, everyone here is family. But It's always the drummers for some reason. I was talking to Molly, a living dead girl, and she's married to the drummer of the band. And, yeah, that's that's okay. Well, the I mean, they they just they just I was gonna make a joke.

It's probably a bad joke. You can go for it. We we can bleep it out. Somebody told me this joke the other day. And yeah.

You could bleep this out, but it's funny. And she said, well, you know, I'm dating a drummer too. And I I have a drummer joke. I was like, oh, yeah. She was like, yeah.

I'm dating the drummer because I like how they bang. I was like, that's cool. Simple simple and easy. I had I had a feeling that that was the punch line. Yeah.

Yeah. It's not the basis. It wasn't my joke. I can't take credit for it, but it it was very funny. So I might just keep that in there and put it on our YouTube channel just to just for yeah.

I don't think my boss, Jade, watches. But But, yeah, I'm excited for you guys to watch you guys perform tonight. It's gonna be awesome. You guys teamed up with Boy What on that, on that EP with the production wise. And, I love Boy What's, songs.

I think I played it, like, one of his tracks. But which one was the one Plansy. Planty. That was the one that I played on the air. I did not I did not know that you were such a fan of Boy What?

Boy What is, like, I I just called Andrew my best friend. Eli oh, well, actually, he people know that he's Eli. I've been calling him Eli. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. So Casey said his name was Eli in a previous interview. I remember that. No. And and people know that his name is Eli.

He is we've been friend I've been friends with Eli longer than I've been friends with Casey. Okay. He is just, like, one of the most incredible people ever. He is so talented, and writing with him is, like, the easiest thing I've ever done in my life. He's just he's he's magic.

He's straight magic. The songs are a complete jam for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Plan z was great.

I for I was trying to figure out in the car when was the first time I heard Deadlands because I heard House of Cards first. And I don't know if it's because I saw one of your videos pop up, And I immediately was like, we need to put this on Jank Show, which is our metal show. What's so funny is he actually like, when when we started working on Deadlands together, like, boy, what wasn't even, like, a thought? Like, he he wasn't even making much metal at the time. Like, his songwriting journey and his production journey is so absurd.

Like, it's it's crazy how talented he is. And he's talked about it in interviews before. But when he started, like, working with the with us, he just got on this crazy metal kick. And the first ever boy what song was like a Squidward rap song, and then he did a SpongeBob, like, country song. And I told him, like, when the are you gonna do metal, bro?

Like, you're so good. And, of course, the first metal when he drops is the biggest one. Like Of course. You know? It was it was fake.

And I'm I'm glad. It it's honestly that he the fact that he was working with Deadlands and then put out a boy what metal banger, that, like, changed the whole trajectory. Like, it's not I mean, you you know he worked on House of Cards. Right? I I thought he would've.

Yeah. That was the first thing that he touched of ours. And we had brought him a pretty crappy demo, and we were we were literally just about to put it out as is. And then, you know, I was like, no. No.

We gotta we gotta fix this. And so he leveled us up. And then we couldn't go backwards. And Eli just propelled us like a like a home run-in a baseball field. I don't know.

Absolutely. I I honestly, as a producer, like, learned so much from him, and I, like, I feel like I owe so much to him. Like, I feel like I learned a crazy amount, and now I can really, like, hold my own and, like, the the producer's thing. It's insane. He doesn't do the the the voices, does he?

The Like, he doesn't do, like, the impression. He he just kinda he sings, but or look. He has a he has a great voice. I figured. AI voice.

That's what I felt that's what I figured because I I can do only Patrick Star. And that's the only thing I can that's, like, the only impression I can do is just where's the leak, ma'am? Wow. Colin Pinhead, like, that whole thing What the hell? That was a good idea.

I think you need to start interviewing people with your Patrick voice. You should. Yeah. That's hi. Insane.

I'm Peaches. Yeah. I sound like a big dumb guy, you know. You know, when I was in high school, we we read with Mice and Men, and I was called Lenny so many times. Oh.

He's the big dumb character and yeah. Aw. Well, and also my last question here for you because I know you guys have to get on get ready soon for the whole show, but, I know Scene Queen does a lot with Cody. You've set it off. Do you guys ever plan on doing anything with Cody?

Because I know he's also a producer in his own way. Oh my god. I would love to. I I CJ and I both love Set It Off, and we actually they had invited us to play their festival. I believe it was last year.

Yeah. Why worry? Why worry fest. And it was so cool. It was at the House Of Blues in Anaheim.

It was great. So we were, like, five seconds away from Disneyland. It was awesome. When we got there, I saw Cody, and I was like, hi. And he was like, thank you so much for play like, absolute sweetheart.

He's the nicest dude ever. He is. Yeah. He he He he really is so sweet. I have my ranking.

And Cody's up there when it comes to, like, the nicest rock stars. Him, Chris, motionless, you know. That that that is, like, so important to me. Like, it's like like, you know, you could be like, you could write the best music. You could have the best stage presence.

But in this world, it costs $0 to be a nice person. And if you are a nice person, man, you are high on my list. True. Well, there we go. Well, I'm excited to hear you guys tonight.

I'm like, I was making sure that I came to Salt Lake City for this show because I wanted to see you guys that badly. So appreciate you for doing and doing this. Thank you. Yeah. Of course.

So and, that's that's that's it. The artist's interrogations podcast is a production of Riverbend Media Group. For more information or to contact the show, visit riverbendmediagroup.com.
